Sundays are meant for racing. With the weekend off from Formula 1, Scuderia AlphaTauri driver Pierre Gasly decided to race in a different fashion coming away with a win.
Along with some of the biggest names in action sports, professional athletes and other professional drivers, the first of three Red Bull Homestretch events – a virtual race series rooted in light-hearted competition, driver banter and trash talking, is officially in the books.
While it was mostly fun and games, this spirited form of virtual racing played on Gran Turismo Sport live on Red Bull Twitch, at the end of the event, Pierre Gasly came away with the win. Despite no real-life points at stake, competitors pulled out all the stops in the ultimate chase for bragging rights, leaving solemn race attitudes in the rear-view mirror as each embraced the varying track conditions and on-the-fly rule changes.
Through the seven-race event, the 10 competitors, comprised of notable athletes and professional drivers, were split into two teams: the Red Team and the Blue Team. The first and second place winners of race two, Gasly and Scott Speed, became team captains for the remaining races, and conducted a schoolyard-style method of picking the rest of their teams. The Red Team consisted of Gasly, Timmy Hansen, Coco Zurita, Kareem Maddox and Dominique Jones while the Blue Team was Speed, Travis Pastrana, Canyon Barry, Johnny “Dribble2Much” Stephene and Robbie Hummel.

At the end of the sixth race, the final points tally saw a painstakingly close result, with the Red Team earning 83 points and the Blue Team earning 82 points. During the seventh and final race in the Red Bull Ring, drivers were taken by surprise with a sudden rule change, as the Red Team would race against each other for the single “event champion” title. Speed, the top points-earner on Team Blue, was also allowed to race. Speed was leading the race in the final laps before being blocked by Gasly’s teammate Hummel, who forcefully pulled a sacrifice-fly move on Speed, bumping him out of the lead and allowing Gasly to slide into first place.
