In a groundbreaking fusion of sport and spectacle, Swiss freeskiing sensation Fabian Bösch has unveiled Circus Bösch, a daring performance set against the awe-inspiring backdrop of the Schilthorn in the Bernese Alps. Eschewing traditional circus elements, Bösch incorporates trapeze swings, bouncy balls, and snow-covered railings to create a performance that combines athletic precision with whimsical creativity.
The inspiration for Circus Bösch struck during a gym session, where the freeskier envisioned integrating bouncy balls into ski jumps. This innovative idea sparked the creation of a snow circus that has captivated audiences with its blend of daring stunts and playful elements. Bösch's newly released YouTube video invites viewers into this winter wonderland, showcasing his leaps between trapeze swings and acrobatic feats on bouncy balls, all set amidst the iconic peaks of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau mountains.
Creating Circus Bösch was no small feat. Bösch collaborated with Helvepark, a Swiss company renowned for crafting innovative snow parks, to bring his vision to life. Together, they designed custom trapeze and rail setups on the Schilthorn's slopes. The project required trial and error, as Bösch and the Helvepark team experimented with various configurations to achieve the perfect setup. “We didn’t have much time,” Bösch recalls. “The shapers from Helvepark asked me how they should set up the different elements. I didn’t have any more of an idea than they did. We had to try out a lot of options and listen to both our experience and our gut feeling when we were building the elements.”
Bösch likened the intensity of creating Circus Bösch to that of competing in major skiing events. He faced the pressure of performing with a team watching his every move, unlike the solitude he experiences during competitions. “‘Circus Bösch’ was about as challenging as taking part in a big competition. What really got to me were the little falls – approaching an obstacle 30 times and failing 30 times. In a contest, I’m alone, so when I mess up it only bothers me. With ‘Circus Bösch’, there are 20 people on the mountain. You don’t want to disappoint anyone.”
The Schilthorn, famous for its appearance in the James Bond film "On Her Majesty’s Secret Service," serves as a fitting stage for this unique show. The mountain is not only a cinematic icon but also a popular destination for winter sports enthusiasts, featuring attractions like the Pända Snowpark—a paradise for both amateur and professional freestylers.
