Another Ferrari Pole on the Season. Can They Capitalize Into A Win?
Charles Leclerc showcased his exceptional pace during the qualifying session for the Las Vegas Grand Prix, securing pole position on the all-new Strip Circuit. The Ferrari driver outperformed his teammate Carlos Sainz and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.
Leclerc consistently demonstrated his speed throughout the morning practice sessions and delivered a impressive lap time of 1m 32.726s during the crucial pole shootout. This placed him half a tenth ahead of Sainz, who will face a grid penalty, causing him to drop 10 places.
While Leclerc and Sainz improved on their second Q3 runs, Verstappen was unable to find any additional pace and returned to the pits, settling for third place. George Russell secured fourth position, becoming the sole remaining Mercedes driver after Lewis Hamilton failed to make it through Q2.
The challenging and cool conditions provided an opportunity for several drivers to shine. Pierre Gasly achieved an incredible fifth place for Alpine, while Williams teammates Alex Albon and Logan Sargeant secured sixth and seventh positions respectively. Valtteri Bottas from Alfa Romeo claimed eighth place.
Sergio Perez, alongside Hamilton, was eliminated in Q2, resulting in a 12th-place start for the Red Bull driver. Kevin Magnussen secured ninth place for Haas, with Fernando Alonso completing the top 10 for Aston Martin. Hamilton’s early exit in Q2 left him starting in 11th, but he will gain a position due to Sainz’s grid penalty.
McLaren experienced a disastrous session, with Lando Norris finishing in 16th place, missing out on Q2 by a mere 0.020s. F1 rookie Oscar Piastri secured the second-to-last spot on the grid in 19th place.
Esteban Ocon and Zhou Guanyu failed to match the pace of their teammates and were eliminated in the first qualifying segment, finishing in 17th and 18th places respectively. Yuki Tsunoda struggled throughout the session, with one of his lap times being deleted for exceeding track limits and making a mistake on his final run, resulting in him starting last on the grid in 20th place.
