Rebecca Schnell, kicked off her career in the industry by first being a crew chief. She married Darron Schnell, also a driver for the Hot Wheels Monster TrucksLive tour and was inspired by his passion and happiness as a performer, living out his dream every day.

While traveling with Darron and going to nursing school full time, she worked alongside him repairing broken parts of his truck, understanding the physics of the trucks, and learning as much as she could about the mechanics of those the machines.

This experience ignited a fire in Rebecca to one day become a monster truck driver herself and compete alongside her husband. Rebecca landed that opportunity in 2019, and her career took off in January 2020 behind the wheel in the first-ever Hot Wheels Monster Trucks Live European tour. Driving and competing in the tour as the first female driver for Hot Wheels Monster Trucks Live, was the highlight of Rebecca’s career. Her fierce competitiveness and solid driving skills quickly captured the attention and adoration of Hot Wheels fans, winning her first freestyle event in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Rebecca is thrilled to be a part of the exciting return of the Hot Wheels Monster Trucks Live domestic tour returning this weekend in Louisville, KY where she will be making her debut as driver of the tour’s new BigfootMidwest Madness, a first-ever collaboration between Hot Wheels and Bigfoot.

As a travel emergency room nurse and monster truck driver, Rebecca is an absolute role model and she cannot wait to get up close and personal with all the young girls and boys at the shows and inspire them to ignite their challenger spirit and live out their dreams, and the subject of this week’s Behind the Action.

AST: When you are at the day job as a nurse, especially being a travel nurse where you meet new co-workers regularly, what is their response when they ask you about your interests outside of work?

RS: Most just look at me with a blank stare. It is that look of the words not registering correctly. They hear it but it always takes a moment to compute and then they say, “what did you say?\"AST: In a sport where risk is a key component, most would not expect a nurse to be in the position you are, but you desire to be a driver began with being around your husband.

RS: Darren and I have been together for twelve years and now married for ten, and I wrenched on his broken parts for so many years and I had prepared myself to follow my desire to drive a truck so when the opportunity to get into the drivers seat in 2019 came, I was ready. I am a very competitive person in the first place, and I wanted to have the same fun the drivers where having, so when my seat became open, I did not hesitate for a moment to get behind the wheel.AST: In earlier years, you used to compete in riding horses, but going from something with 1 horse power to a machine with 1500 horsepower is a transition.

RS: Riding horses and driving trucks taught me the value of preparation; before, during and after the contest. You take care of the horse and you take car of the truck. It is funny though, the horse would talk back a little but you would be surprised at how much personality these machines have. They will give you attitude as well.

AST: Being able to travel and perform is fun, but to do it alongside your husband makes your job more unique. What has been your favorite part of this journey to this point?

RS: Being on tour together is the best. Nobody wants to be separated from family when they are at work, so to be able to always be together allows us to have the comfort of “home\" no matter where we are. It allows us to settle in and focus on the job at hand entirely, rather than having the longing for home and family. One of my favorite animals is a turtle, they have a shell and they can pack it up and take it with them. We are turtles, but we are turtles together.

AST: Being a female in this industry no longer has the “whoa\" factor that there is a female driver, but it still lends to be unique and puts you in the spotlight to be the one person many want to talk to and meet. How do you see yourself and a role model and inspiration?

RS: I really enjoy that. I love showcasing that you can anything you want to be at any time you want to be it. You can be a nurse and a Monster Truck driver. You can do anything you want to. You do not have to only pick one path in life. Beyond that, as a married couple, Darren and I are showing families that we are a team. You do not always have to go at your dreams alone.
